Rory McIlroy Files for Divorce from Wife Erica After 7-Year Marriage
Rory McIlroy has filed for divorce from his wife, Erica Stoll, after seven years of marriage, his communications team confirmed on Tuesday.
According to Doug Ferguson of the Associated Press, McIlroy filed a petition for dissolution of marriage in Palm Beach County, Florida.
"The petition for divorce described the marriage as irretrievably broken and asked that a prenuptial agreement signed about a month before their April 21, 2017, wedding be validated and enforced," Ferguson wrote. "The prenuptial agreement was sealed."
McIlroy and Stoll met in 2012 at the Ryder Cup.
Stoll, who was working as the PGA's manager of championship volunteer operations, arranged for McIlroy to receive a police escort to Medinah Country Club after the golfer didn't realize he was in the Central Time Zone and nearly missed his tee time against Keegan Bradley in match play.
McIlroy made it with 12 minutes to spare and defeated Bradley, 2 and 1.
McIlroy was dating tennis star Caroline Wozniacki at the time and got engaged to her on New Year's Eve in 2013. However, McIlroy broke off the engagement in 2014.
McIlroy and Stoll began dating later that year before marrying in 2017. Their three-year-old daughter, Poppy, was born in September 2020.
The news comes two days before McIlroy is set to tee off Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, Kentucky, for the 106th PGA Championship. He will speak with the media Wednesday, a day before he tees off alongside Dustin Johnson and Justin Rose.
McIlroy also just won the Wells Fargo Championship on Sunday for the 26th victory of his PGA Tour career.
