After one year at Golden West, Gottlieb transferred to Oklahoma State prior to the 1997-98 season. He appeared in 97 games over three seasons with the Cowboys, averaging 5.2 points and 8.2 assists per contest.

Oklahoma State made the NCAA tournament in all three seasons with Gottlieb at point guard. The team advanced to the Elite Eight in his final year before losing to Florida.

Following a brief professional career in the United States Basketball League and overseas, Gottlieb transitioned into broadcasting. He co-hosted ESPN Radio's GameNight and worked as a college basketball analyst for the network.
