NBA Rumors: LeBron James Wants to Retire with Lakers amid Contract, Cavs Buzz

Doric SamMay 14, 2024

LeBron James had people buzzing about his courtside appearance at Monday's Eastern Conference Semifinal matchup between the Cleveland Cavaliers and Boston Celtics in Cleveland, but he reportedly has no intentions of leaving the Los Angeles Lakers this offseason.

During this week's episode of Buha's Block, The Athletic's Jovan Buha said around the 10:00 mark that there are "signs pointing toward LeBron being back and LeBron wanting to retire as a Laker."

James can opt out of his contract with the Lakers this summer and test free agency. ESPN's Brian Windhorst reported on Tuesday that after James' appearance at Monday's game, he was contacted by some general managers who texted him with Windhorst's viral "Now why is that?" meme when inquiring about James' attendance.

Windhorst pointed out that James and his wife had been visiting Northeast Ohio, so the 39-year-old figured he should take the opportunity to watch the NBA playoffs in person. It was also noted that James was aware of the reaction his appearance would stir up.

There are a lot of factors that can play into James' decision on whether he will opt out of his contract. The Lakers are in search of a new head coach, so it's important for them to find someone who will mesh with James and put him in a position to compete for another championship.

Also, James has made it clear that he hopes to have the opportunity to play alongside his son Bronny James, who is currently testing the NBA draft waters. If Bronny remains in the draft, there's no guarantee that Los Angeles would land him with their No. 17 pick, as other teams could select him in hopes of luring his legendary father to their franchise.

Still, Buha reiterated that "all indications are LeBron and the Lakers will agree to some form of partnership going forward." It remains to be seen how long James will extend his iconic career, but it sounds like he will be in Hollywood for the foreseeable future.
