The NBA released scrimmage rosters for the 2024 scouting combine Monday, with USC guard Bronny James among the noteworthy participants.
The vast majority of players participating in scrimmages are fringe prospects looking to boost their stock. James is by far the biggest name of the group but he also fits the bill after a disappointing lone season at USC.
The eldest son of LeBron James averaged 4.8 points, 2.8 rebounds and 2.1 assists per game while shooting 36.6 percent after making his debut in December following surgery for a congenital heart defect. The defect was discovered after James went into cardiac arrest last July during a USC practice session.
Adrian Wojnarowski and Jonathan Givony of ESPN reported James was given full medical clearance to play by the NBA's Fitness to Play Panel. While he is also in the transfer portal, Shams Charania of The Athletic and Stadium noted James plans to keep his name in the 2024 NBA draft.
Whether he's ultimately selected remains to be seen. B/R's Jonathan Wasserman has James going undrafted in his latest mock draft and does not have him among his 50 best prospects in the class. That represents a marked drop off for a player considered a potential lottery pick a year ago, and James undoubtedly hopes taking the floor in scrimmages will help his stock.
North Carolina forward Harrison Ingram, projected by Wasserman to go No. 25 overall to the New York Knicks, is the highest-rated player participating in the scrimmages.
