Malik Nabers, Jayden Daniels Call Off $10K ROY Bet After Learning NFL Gambling Rules

Tyler ConwayMay 10, 2024

The friendly wager between Jayden Daniels and Malik Nabers is no more.

The New York Giants rookie receiver told reporters that he and Daniels called off their $10,000 bet over who would win Offensive Rookie of the Year after learning the NFL prohibits such wagers.

Nabers let the cat out of the bag during a podcast appearance last month.

"Going against him is gonna be fun," Nabers said (h/t Pat Leonard of the New York Daily News). "We got a bet going for Rookie of the Year. Whoever loses gotta pay, I think it's $10,000 cash."

Daniels confirmed the bet during an appearance this week on All Facts No Breaks with Keyshawn Johnson (beginning at the 40:28 mark):

"Man, he wasn't supposed to tell nobody," Daniels said. "We got a little something going on."

The NFL's gambling policy prohibits players from "placing, soliciting or facilitating any bet, whether directly or through a third party." The league has kept an extremely watchful eye on gambling in wake of legalized sports gambling taking hold across the United States.

It's unlikely Daniels and Nabers will face any punishment from the NFL, as this was a friendly wager that seemingly was done without knowledge of any violations.

Daniels was taken with the No. 2 pick in the 2024 NFL draft by the Washington Commanders, while Nabers went No. 6 to the Giants. The LSU stars were the most dynamic QB-WR duo in college football last season, with Daniels throwing for 3,812 yards and 40 touchdowns against four interceptions and Nabers hauling in 89 passes for 1,569 yards and 14 touchdowns.

Both are expected to sit atop the depth chart for their respective teams heading into their rookie seasons, so it would not be a surprise if they competed for Offensive Rookie of the Year. They'll just have to do so without the added $10,000 incentive.
