Tank Dell Will Make Full Recovery After Being Injured in Shooting, Texans Owner Says

Timothy RappMay 6, 2024

Houston Texans owner Cal McNair said on Monday that Tank Dell is expected to fully recovery after the wideout was shot at a Florida restaurant in April.

"We're just grateful that, I believe no one was seriously hurt. But it looks like Tank will make a full recovery. We saw him in the office the other day. He looked good, in good spirits. But he'll have to rehab and get back to where he was.

"I've talked with Tank, we had a good conversation," head coach DeMeco Ryans added. "I've talked to him several times and Tank will be fine."

Ten people were shot at the Cabana Live restaurant in Sanford, Florida, in late April following an altercation. A 16-year-old boy and another suspect opened fire at the establishment, which at the time was hosting around 200 people, including Dell.

A security guard at the venue managed to tackle the shooter, preventing further injuries or casualties.

"The heroic actions of this security officer took a very dangerous situation and made it less significant than it potentially could have been. He tackled this guy from behind and brought him to the ground," Seminole County Sheriff Dennis Lemma told reporters at the time. "We are incredibly lucky that nobody is dead and there aren't more injuries."

The Texans described Dell's injury at the time as a "minor wound."

The 24-year-old was excellent for Houston in his rookie season, catching 47 passes on 75 targets for 709 yards and seven scores in 11 games. A fractured left fibula suffered in early December ended his season prematurely, but not before he helped lead the Texans to a 7-5 start.

Led by fellow rookies C.J. Stroud and Will Anderson Jr.—who were named the Offensive and Defensive Rookies of the Year, respectively—the Texans went on to post a 10-7 record, an AFC South title and a Wild Card Round victory over the Cleveland Browns.

It was a fantastic year for a team that was 3-13-1 the season prior, and big things are expected for Dell and the Houston offense going forward once he's healthy enough to return to the field.
