Commanders GM: Trade Offer 'Didn't Even Move the Needle' Before Jayden Daniels Pick

Tyler ConwayMay 5, 2024

Washington Commanders general manager Adam Peters didn't even come close to trading the No. 2 pick in last month's NFL draft.

Peters appeared on BIG 100.3 last week and said the team only received one offer he would even consider "solid."

"I think you'd be surprised, really, in terms of the offers," Peters said Thursday on BIG Rock Mornings with Jaxon. "We got, really one solid offer and didn't even move the needle. It would have taken, it had to move mountains to get us off Jayden."

The Commanders selected LSU quarterback Jayden Daniels with the second pick. Peters said the team was zeroed in on Daniels for some time ahead of the 2024 NFL draft. ESPN's John Keim reported Peters was so enamored with Daniels that he told team ownership that the Heisman winner could "change this franchise forever."

Daniels threw for 3,812 yards and 40 touchdowns against four interceptions while adding 1,134 yards and 10 scores on the ground during his final year at LSU. He was considered arguably the best deep-ball thrower among quarterbacks in this draft class and is by far the most dynamic runner, earning comparisons to Lamar Jackson.

The Commanders have been in desperate search for a franchise quarterback for decades. They thought they had their man with Robert Griffin III in 2012 and again with Dwayne Haskins in 2019. Neither of those first-rounders panned out. Their best quarterback of the 21st century has been Kirk Cousins, who exited the franchise in 2018 after the Commanders refused to commit to him long term.

Based on Peters' comments, Daniels will never have to worry about Washington's commitment to him as its franchise face.
