Chiefs' Xavier Worthy Dispels Weight Concerns: 'Not Going to Be a Problem' in NFL

Andrew PetersMay 4, 2024

Kansas City Chiefs' newest wide receiver Xavier Worthy doesn't think his weight will be a concern as he begins his NFL journey.

Worthy weighed in under the 170-pound mark at the NFL combine, but said his size shouldn't be a problem in the NFL, per SI.com's Jordan Foote (h/t Pro Football Talk's Josh Alper).

"I weighed in at 169," Worthy said. "I don't think I took big hits, I delivered them. I feel like it's not going to be a problem. I feel like just understanding your strengths and your weaknesses, I feel like that's the big thing in the league. Don't, obviously, don't try to go hit a 250-pound linebacker. Just understanding your strengths, like I said. D-Jack came into the league at 169 and understood his strengths, so just using your strengths to your strength."

Worthy pointed to NFL legend DeSean Jackson as an example of why his size shouldn't be cause for concern. Jackson, who retired in 2022, notched 11,623 career receiving yards and 58 touchdowns despite weight around 175 for most of his career.

If Worthy can have similar success, his weight will be an afterthought.

Worthy certainly makes up for his frame with unreal speed. At the NFL Scouting Combine in March, he ran a record-breaking 4.21 40-yard dash, showing off his NFL-ready quickness.

In his final season at Texas in 2023, Worthy notched 1,014 receiving yards and five touchdowns. In his three-season career with the Longhorns, he collected 2,071 receiving yards and 26 touchdowns.

Now, he'll look to prove that his weight isn't a problem as he begins his NFL career. Worthy joins a Chiefs team that is looking to make history as the first team to win three Super Bowls in a row, and he's hoping to play a valuable part in that quest.
