NBA Rumors: Tyrone Corbin Must Side with Youth to Succeed in Utah

Brian MaziqueJan 5, 2012

If Tyrone Corbin wants his stay in Utah to be half as long as his predecessor, Jerry Sloan, he needs to recognize the direction this team is going in. He must ignore comments and grumblings like these from frustrated veterans like Raja Bell, whose playing time has decreased, in favor of youngsters:

"

If Utah wants him on its team, he’ll continue to do his job to the best of his ability. If the organization doesn’t, the 12-year veteran will perform as a professional until he joins another franchise.

"

He conveyed this message after Corbin gave this answer about Bell's role on the team:

“I think it’s a better question for him to answer. I really don’t — you’ll have to ask him the question,”

"

Bell has always been outspoken and emotional. Corbin can't feed in to that. The Jazz are not championship contenders, and they are a borderline playoff team in an up and down Western Conference. His actions must be in favor of the players that represent the future, and that is his young core of Enes Kanter, Derrick Favors and Gordon Hayward.

As a matter of fact, a veteran role player like Raja Bell may be a nice trade piece to a contender for a late second-round pick. It isn't much, but it will do the Jazz more good than having Bell and other veterans stunt the growth of the young players and sabotage Corbin.

The Jazz are playing youthful tunes. Old heads must recognize, or move along.
