Suns' Kevin Durant on Being Down 2 Games to Wolves: 'S--t, Can't Give Up on Us Now'

Timothy RappApr 23, 2024

The Phoenix Suns fell against the Minnesota Timberwolves on Tuesday night, 105-93, dropping them into an 0-2 hole in the Western Conference first-round series.

But all hope is not lost, according to Kevin Durant.

"S--t, can't give up on us now," he told reporters following the loss.

"Don't count us out," Devin Booker added when asked if he had a message for Suns' fans. "It's a series for a reason."

The series now shifts back to Phoenix for Games 3 and 4 on Friday and Sunday, respectively, giving the Suns the opportunity to draw back even on their home court.

As for Durant, the 35-year-old couldn't match his fantastic Game 1 performance (31 points, seven rebounds), managing just 18 points in Game 2. The Suns struggled in general, with Booker's 20 points leading the way.

The Minnesota defense forced 19 turnovers, while both Durant and Booker were a shocking minus-24 in their minutes. That obviously isn't a recipe for success for Phoenix.

The Suns also seemed to lose their composure at points, frustrated with how the contest was officiated.

"You have to," Bradley Beal told reporters about the team needing to better handle adversity. "Whatever it takes as a team. We gotta be better at coming together collectively in those moments. It's crazy, nobody's energy is in the wrong space, nobody's mindset is in the wrong place."

Head coach Frank Vogel concurred:

This series has certainly flipped the script from the regular season, when Phoenix went 3-0 against Minnesota. But the playoffs are a different beast.

In Game 1, Anthony Edwards who lit up Phoenix to the tune of 33 points. He was more muted in Game 2, with only 15 points, but the T-Wolves' defense made up the difference.

"I think our level of urgency from the first minute of the game is at the highest level. We know that when we turn it up, we're able to be a unique defensive team," Rudy Gobert told reporters. "But when we don't have to turn it up because we're doing it from first minute, it's a different type of defense."

And if Phoenix—which has now been held to under 100 points in both games—doesn't find a way to solve that defense back home, it's going to be a very short series.
