MLB Draft Scout: Charlie Condon 'a True Unicorn' and Compares to Yankees' Aaron Judge

Adam WellsApr 23, 2024

As Charlie Condon and Jac Caglianone are seemingly in a battle to one-up each other in the power department, the Georgia superstar appears to have separated himself from the field in the race to be the No. 1 pick in the 2024 MLB draft.

Per ESPN's Mark Schlabach, one MLB scout described Condon as a "unicorn" who is a "generational college player" and compared his skill set to New York Yankees star Aaron Judge:

"It's the super long arms and super fast bat. You look at him and his swing, you think you're going to beat him on the other half, and then he just destroys the ball. Because of the length of his levers, his power is just so seamless and easy. He just flips balls 450 feet. The guys who do that, it's just very rarefied air."

There was a lot of uncertainty about the top of the 2024 draft coming into the season. The picture seems to be a lot more clear now going into the home stretch of the regular season.

Condon is hitting .483/.584/1.119 with nearly as many homers (26) as strikeouts (29) in 151 at-bats. He's two home runs away from tying Georgia's single-season and career record, both held by Gordon Beckham.

Caglianone is the only other player in this year's draft class whose offensive potential comes close to Condon. He is hitting .401/.495/.854 with 23 homers in 39 games for Florida. His Saturday.

The Athletic's Keith Law has Condon ranked as the top player in the class because of his "potential for a huge triple-slash line" and ability to be an above-average defender, likely at third base.

Thanks to the MLB draft lottery, the Cleveland Guardians won the No. 1 overall pick this year. There's no guarantee they will select Condon with that selection, but his rare offensive potential certainly makes him the most intriguing player to go at that spot.

If Condon turns into anything close that the player Judge has been for the Yankees, he will make whatever team ends up selecting him extremely happy.

The first round of the 2024 MLB draft will take place on July 14.
