NBA Draft 2024: Updated Selection Order and Lottery Odds After Tiebreaker Results

Andrew PetersApr 22, 2024

The NBA draft order became clearer on Monday after the tiebreaker results were released.

According to Draft Express' Jonathan Givony, the Charlotte Hornets have been assigned to the No. 3 pick slot while the Portland Trailblazers were given the No. 4 pick slot, meaning those two teams were decided to be the third and fourth-worst teams.

The teams with the three worst records each have a 14 percent chance of landing the No.; 1 overall pick.

Here's a look at the updated lottery odds:

1. Detroit Pistons (14 percent chance of winning No. 1 pick)

2. Washington Wizards (14 percent)

3. Charlotte Hornets (14 percent)

4. Portland Trail Blazers (12.5 percent)

5. San Antonio Spurs (10.5 percent)

6. Toronto Raptors (9 percent)

7. Memphis Grizzlies (7.5 percent)

8. Utah Jazz (6 percent)

9. Houston Rockets (via Brooklyn Nets; 4.5 percent)

10. Atlanta Hawks (3 percent)

11. Chicago Bulls (2 percent)

12. Oklahoma City Thunder (via Houston Rockets; 1.5 percent)

13. Sacramento Kings (1 percent)

14. Portland Trail Blazers (via Golden State Warriors; 0.5 percent)

Here's a look at the selection order beyond the lottery, per ESPN.com:

15. Miami Heat

16. Philadelphia 76ers

17. Los Angeles Lakers (could be conveyed to New Orleans Pelicans)

18. Orlando Magic

19. Toronto Raptors (via Indiana Pacers)

20. Cleveland Cavaliers

21. New Orleans Pelicans (via Milwaukee Bucks)

22. Phoenix Suns

23. Milwaukee Bucks (via New Orleans Pelicans)

24. New York Knicks (via Dallas Mavericks)

25. New York Knicks

26. Washington Wizards (via Los Angeles Clippers)

27. Minnesota Timberwolves

28. Denver Nuggets

29. Utah Jazz (via Oklahoma City Thunder)

30. Boston Celtics

While the Lakers were awarded the No. 17 pick, that selection can be conveyed to the Pelicans if they choose to take it due to a previous trade. Likewise, the Pacers' No. 19 pick will go to the Toronto Raptors. The Bucks and Pacers will also swap picks because of a trade.

The entire draft lottery consists of the 14 teams that didn't make the playoffs and the exact order will be decided after the NBA Draft Lottery on May 12.

While the stakes for getting the top pick aren't as high as they were last year with teams looking to draft rookie phenom Vector Wembanyama, landing the No. 1 pick would still be extremely valuable for a group of struggling teams.

The Hornets got a slight boost by earning the No. 3 spot, as their odds would have decreased from 14 percent to 12.5 percent had they fallen to No. 4. After a rough year in Charlotte, landing the top pick could be huge in turning its franchise around.

While the teams selecting later in the draft didn't have as much at stake, even a slight change in the draft order could make a big difference, as plenty of solid players come out of the mid to late first round.

The NBA Draft will take place on Thursday, June 27 in Chicago.
