Dwight Howard: T-Mac's Assessment of D12 Is Right on the Money

Brian MaziqueJun 5, 2018

Tracy McGrady hit the nail on the head recently when he was quoted by Chris Tomasson of FS Florda as he talked about the similarities between Shaq and Dwight Howard, and why he felt Dwight wants to leave Orlando:

"

"Shaq obviously felt that, with his personality, he didn't fit down there. So he wanted to go to Hollywood, which worked out for him. Dwight is kind of on that same cusp with the same personality. He wants to be Hollywood. He's just that type of dude."

"

While I totally agree with T-Mac, now of the Atlanta Hawks, his comments about players that have achieved far more than he ever will is a bit hard to accept. Especially the ones that preceded that quote:

"Are they winning down there? Are they competing for a championship? That's the reason," McGrady said about why the Magic have developed a reputation for not being able to hold onto stars. "That's why we play the game, to win a championship.

"

This coming from the guy with all the talent in the world, but never won a playoff series, let alone a championship. Both Shaq and Howard have accomplished more on a team level than McGrady.

It's kind of like Jose Canseco calling out the baseball world on steroids in his book Juiced. It's like we knew he was telling the truth, but found it difficult to accept, coming from someone so guilty of his own accusations and with questionable motives for spilling the beans.

If D12 follows in Shaq's footsteps, he'll trace them all the way to the Hall of Fame. Where will McGrady's lead?

Why is he even talking about Dwight Howard to that degree? I know he was asked a question, but his short rant went above and beyond a simple response. It seems McGrady is still hungry for the spotlight, though his body won't allow him to compete on a level that demands it anymore.

It is also a bit contradictory to a statement he made just days ago. McGrady said this of his choice to sign with the Hawks:

"

"I didn't want to go to a team to chase a championship"

"

Wait a minute, didn't you say that was why you play the game? Which is it? This is a classic example of talking too much. It looks worse when it's perceived as envy and bitterness because of lack of accomplishment. Was it that T-Mac didn't want to chase a ring, or that no team chasing a ring wanted him?

Either way, he's a member of a pretty good Atlanta Hawks team. They're not quite a championship contender, but then again, that shouldn't matter to him anyway.
