The squad was previously the subject of a long-running reality show, Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders: Making the Team, which aired for 16 seasons and last ran in 2021.

The Netflix documentary followed the Cowboys cheerleaders across the 2023 NFL season, which saw the team claim an NFC East title but once again fall well short of its goal of winning a Super Bowl.

Greg Whiteley, who directed the series, emphasized that the Cowboys afforded he and his other producers plenty of editorial independence.

"The kind of access and creative freedom we need to make the kind of work we want to make is not easy to come by — especially when dealing with a brand as large as the Dallas Cowboys," he said to Netflix's Amanda Richards.

"To their infinite credit, the Cowboys offered unfettered access for the year we filmed the DCC and left us alone. The result is an authentic portrait of one of the most storied and beloved institutions we have in American pop culture."

The Cowboys cheerleaders were founded in 1961, but it wasn't until 1972 they began adopting the iconic look that remains today. Throughout that decade, their popularity exploded as the Cowboys team was a mainstay in the Super Bowl.

America's Sweethearts will run for seven episodes.
