Real Madrid Thrills Fans by Beating Manchester City on Penalties in UCL QF

Paul KasabianApr 17, 2024

Real Madrid has crushed Manchester City's hopes of winning a second consecutive treble after winning the quarterfinal round via penalties (4-4 aggregate, 4-3 PK) on Wednesday.

Antonio Rรผdiger's penalty kick clinched the win for Real Madrid, who exacted revenge on Manchester City after losing 4-0 to them in the second leg of last year's Champions League semifinals.

Real Madrid and Manchester City posted a 3-3 draw in the first leg.

Man City dominated the second leg, but they somehow didn't have a victory to show for it.

Rodrygo put Real Madrid up 4-3 on aggregate after this 12th-minute goal:

Kevin De Bruyne responded for Man City in the 76th minute, tying this quarterfinal up at four apiece.

In penalties, Manchester City grabbed the early 1-0 edge after Ederson's save on Luka Modric.

But Andriy Lunin made back-to-back saves on Bernardo Silva and Mateo Kovacic, giving Real Madrid the advantage:

Rรผdiger's goal later sealed the upset, and now the team is going back to the UCL semifinals for the fourth straight time (and 12th time in 14 years).

Real Madrid fans were clearly elated, and analysts were impressed as well. Meanwhile, others reveled in Manchester City's loss.

Manchester City now turns its attention toward winning the Premier League. With six matches remaining, the Citizens have 76 points, just one ahead of second-place Arsenal.

As for Real Madrid, they'll now face Bayern in the semifinals. Dortmund will take on PSG in the other semi.
