Jayden Daniels Rumors: Buzz 'Pointing Towards' Commanders Taking QB in 2024 NFL Draft

Buzz ahead of the 2024 NFL Draft is "pointing towards" the Washington Commanders using the No. 2 pick to draft LSU quarterback Jayden Daniels, according to The Athletic's Dane Brugler.

Brugler noted that things will remain "unpredictable" until the night of April 25, however.

"Truth is, new Washington general manager Adam Peters and head coach Dan Quinn aren't tipping their hands, so everyone is still guessing at this point," Brugler wrote.

The Chicago Bears are presumed to be mortal locks to select USC's Caleb Williams at No. 1, leaving Daniels, UNC's Drake Maye and Michigan's J.J. McCarthy as options for the Commanders' next quarterback.

The only certain thing coming out of the Commanders' camp so far this season is that Peters has not yet tipped his hand as to what his team plans to do with the franchise's first top-two pick since 2020.

Heading into that draft, the Commanders were widely expected to use their last No. 2 pick to select defensive end Chase Young after the Cincinnati Bengals used their first on quarterback Joe Burrow.

Young, who was coming out of Ohio State, was seen at the time as the best available prospect after Burrow. His career was derailed by injuries, while lower picks in the draft like Tua Tagovailoa and Justin Herbert proved to be far more impactful to their teams, and the Commanders' rebuild under Ron Rivera was delayed yet again.

Peters is also familiar with missing on quarterbacks high in the draft. He was with the San Francisco 49ers when the franchise selected quarterback Trey Lance with the No. 3 pick of the 2021 draft. Like Young, Lance was limited by injuries and eventually traded for an underwhelming return.

Peters, who was hired in January, will now look to begin a more successful rebuild. That starts with not broadcasting which player the Commanders plan to target with No. 2.

This could be good news for Commanders fans' about Peters' effectiveness as a general manager. His team is evidently tight enough to keep all draft plans internal and stop leaks from escaping, and that might leave Washington fans guessing all the way up to April 25.
