NBA Insider: Cavs 'Must Win' vs. Magic or 'There's Going to be Changes' in Cleveland

Tyler ConwayApr 16, 2024

The Cleveland Cavaliers are reportedly heading into a franchise-changing first-round series against the Orlando Magic.

ESPN's Zach Lowe said the series is a "must-win" for the Cavs, who would make "changes" if they're eliminated in the first round for the second straight season.

The biggest change may concern All-Star guard Donovan Mitchell, who is eligible for a four-year extension worth around $200 million this offseason. Mitchell's long-term status in Cleveland has been the subject of rumors almost since the second he arrived, and a first-round exit wouldn't do much to help matters.

If the Cavs aren't able to convince Mitchell to sign the extension, the front office may have to look long and hard at trading him.

As it stands, Mitchell and Darius Garland have never quite meshed the way they hoped and it might behoove the long-term health of the roster to explore a trade there regardless. The frontcourt of Jarrett Allen and Evan Mobley has also always had an expiration date given they both work best as a natural center in the modern game.

Suffice it to say, there's no question there's more than some playoff wins on the line in the coming weeks.
