NBA Confirms Lakers-Grizzlies Game Clock Was 'Inaccurately Set' in 3Q of LA's Win

The NBA confirmed there was a game clock error during the third quarter of the Los Angeles Lakers' Friday night win over the Memphis Grizzlies.

The error occurred after a shot clock violation in the third quarter, according to a statement from an NBA spokesperson provided to ESPN's Dave McMenamin.

The error put an additional one minute and six seconds on the clock, according to the spokesperson.

"While unfortunate, the error was not identified in time to resolve the situation in-game," the statement said.

The Grizzlies were leading at the time of the shot clock violation. The Lakers went on to win 123-120.

During the additional time at the end of the third quarter, the Grizzlies recorded two points, while the Lakers added four to take the lead.

The Grizzlies recovered the advantage late in the fourth quarter, but two free throws and a field goal from LeBron James helped Los Angeles come back to win in regulation.

The confusion centered around a pair of shot clock violations committed by the Grizzlies with 2:20 and 1:14 remaining in the third quarter, respectively, according to Robby Kalland of UPROXX.

The game clock was reset to 2:20 after both violations, which caused the extra time to be played in the third quarter in Memphis and stretched the game to 49 minutes and six seconds.

The NBA's officiating review found other officiating errors in the Lakers victory, including two missed traveling calls on James and a shooting foul on Rui Hachimura in the final two minutes.

The Grizzlies, who were eliminated from playoff contention in March, are in contention for a top-four pick in the 2024 NBA Draft lottery.

The Lakers meanwhile needed the win to climb up into the No. 8 seed in the Western Conference.
