NFL Scout Compares Jayden Daniels to Justin Fields: 'Some Wow but Some Ugly' Plays

Jayden Daniels is the favorite to be taken by the Washington Commanders with the No. 2 pick in this month's NFL draft, but not all scouts are sold.

One NFL scout compared the LSU product to Justin Fields—and not in a favorable manner.

"High upside but has a ton of room (to grow). It will take a couple of years, and the offense has to be tailored (to him). It's going to be some wow but some ugly (plays). A lot like Justin Fields," the scout told Ben Standig of The Athletic.

While Fields still has some backers around the NFL, his complete lack of trade value this offseason is evidence the scout wasn't throwing out a compliment. The Chicago Bears wound up having to ship Fields to the Pittsburgh Steelers in exchange for a conditional sixth-round pick—a jarring return for a quarterback some thought would fetch a Day 2 selection.

Daniels won the Heisman trophy last season after throwing for 3,812 yards and 40 touchdowns while adding 1,134 yards and 10 touchdowns on the ground. It was one of the greatest statistical seasons for a quarterback in NFL history, but some have been left wondering how much credit Daniels deserves and how much goes to his supporting cast.

Receivers Malik Nabers and Brian Thomas Jr. are slated to be first-round draft picks, and their ability to shake defenders made many of Daniels' downfield risks pay off. The windows will get smaller at the NFL level and the hits will get harder—an issue for a quarterback who took too many shots at the collegiate level.

The B/R Scouting Department has Daniels as the No. 31 overall prospect and a marked step down from contemporaries Caleb Williams and Drake Maye.
