Andrew Bynum Would Be the Best Center in the League, If He Wasn't on the Lakers

Grant TaylorJan 5, 2012

I know what you're thinking, Dwight Howard is way better than Andrew Bynum.

I know the stats and understand your reasoning, but I'm here to tell you why Superman isn't the better of the two.

Andrew Bynum, last year, averaged 11.3 points, two rebounds and 9.4 rebounds a game.

In his first three games back from a suspension, Bynum has averaged 22.7 points, two blocks, and 17 rebounds a game. This includes a 28-point performance, and a 20-20 against the Rockets.

And that's with Kobe Bryant and Pau Gasol on his team.

Dwight Howard is averaging slightly less in scoring and rebounding, but leads in blocks by 0.7 a game. And he's their No. 1 option.

If you put Bynum on any other team (other than the Heat, Magic, Mavericks, Spurs or Bulls), he's scoring close to 30 a night and grabbing close to 20 boards (which he already does).

With the Lakers, he's slowly becoming the No. 2 option, right next to Pau Gasol. Becoming the No. 1 option is another story.

Kobe Bryant, being Kobe Bryant, is not willing to let anyone but him be the head honcho. The way he plays is proof of his denial that he no longer wears No. 8, no longer has an afro, and can no longer can score 81 points in a game.

He's no longer the player he once was (if that all didn't make much sense).

Andrew Bynum is in his prime. The Lakers seem to be wasting it with a washed-up Black Mamba.

Kobe's still good—don't get me wrong. In fact, he's still great. Pau Gasol is still one of the best power forwards in the league (No. 3 on my list), but Bynum's the better option.

But unless Mike Brown puts is foot down, Kobe will be Kobe, and Pau will be Pau.

Let's hope he does put his foot down, because I'd much rather see Bynum be Bynum.
