Tennis Player Aaron Cortes Receives 15-Year Ban, $75K Fine for Match-Fixing

The International Tennis Integrity Agency announced Tuesday that Spanish tennis player Aaron Cortes has been banned from the sport for 15 years for match fixing and other offenses.

According to the Associated Press, the ITIA determined that Cortes was guilty of "contriving the outcome of events, accepting money to contrive the outcome of events, failure to report corrupt approaches, wagering on tennis, and providing money to tournament officials in exchange for a wild card."

The 29-year-old Cortes admitted to 35 breaches of the Tennis Anti-Corruption Program from 2016 to 2018, and in addition to his ban, he has been fined $75,000 with $56,250 of that being suspended.

Cortes is a little-known player, as he reached a career-high ranking of 955 in 2017, per the ATP Tour's official website.

The ATP also lists Cortes as having won a grand total of $21,854 during his career in singles and doubles tournaments.

In addition to being banned from playing, Cortes is also banned from coaching at and attending events sanctioned by the Association of Tennis Professionals, International Tennis Federation, Women's Tennis Association or any national association, according to the BBC.

Cortes' ban is set to end on March 27, 2039, when he is 44 years old.
