WWE Rumors: Latest on The Rock's Schedule After WrestleMania 40 Feud with Cody Rhodes
The Rock's first extended run in WWE since 2013 will be ending after WrestleMania 40.
Per ESPN's Mike Coppinger and Marc Raimondi, The Rock is expected to "jump right into" filming his next movie following WWE's biggest show of the year.
The movie is a biopic of mixed martial arts legend Mark Kerr titled The Smashing Machine. Coppinger and Raimondi noted that the Great One's return to wrestling in some ways allowed him to prepare his body for the film because he's been getting leaner to portray an MMA fighter.
"I know he is training and dieting and working out like a maniac, and I think this was strategic by design," Brian Gewirtz, The Rock's longtime business partner, said.
No one expected when The Rock returned to WWE in January that this was going to be a permanent move, but there does remain a question of if or when an eventual match against Roman Reigns might take place.
Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter (h/t Nikunj Walia of Ringside News) reported last month that people in WWE "would like" the bout to take place at the May 25 premium live event in Saudi Arabia.
It would seem highly unlikely that will work out if The Rock is going to start filming a movie very soon.
Meltzer also said on Wrestling Observer Radio (h/t Subhojeet Mukherjee of Ringside News) in February that The Rock has said he wants to wrestle Reigns at WrestleMania.
That was seemingly before plans changed for this year's event, but the chances do seem low that The Rock would want what might be the final singles match of his wrestling career to take place on a show in Saudi Arabia that traditionally airs at noon ET on a Saturday.
The build for WrestleMania also seems to be setting up a future singles match between The Rock and Rhodes. It would definitely be a disappointment based on all of the television angles over the past month if that bout didn't happen before the Brahma Bull inevitably goes back to being a babyface.
For now, though, what we do know is The Rock and Reigns will team up to face Rhodes and Seth Rollins in the main event of night one at WrestleMania 40.
If The Rock and Reigns win, the Reigns-Rhodes match for the undisputed universal title on night two will be contested under Bloodline rules. If Rhodes and Rollins win, the Bloodline will be banned from ringside.
