WWE Rumors: Becky Lynch, Seth Rollins Are Perfect Choices to Open WrestleMania 40

Erik BeastonApr 4, 2024

As much emphasis as there is on the main event of a show the magnitude of WWE WrestleMania, it is equally as important to select the best opener possible to set the tone for the rest of the broadcast.

It warms the crowd up, gets them ready for the rest of the show, and dares the rest of the locker room to try and surpass it, which essentially elevates the rest of the show by proxy.

Dave Meltzer of Wrestling Observer Radio reported that the early expectation is that Becky Lynch will challenge women's world champion Rhea Ripley in the opener of Saturday's show while Seth "Freakin" Rollins defends the World Heavyweight Championship in the opening contest of Sunday's broadcast.

There are no two better choices to get the show started and prove their value right out of the gate than Rollins and Lynch.

The married couple have been standard-bearers for WWE for the last five-to-eight years, routinely appearing in some of the best matches on any show. They are massively over with fans, too, and are bona fide main event Superstars.

They are also in the midst of contract negotiations with WWE and there is no greater bargaining chip than being able to go out, in front of tens of thousands of fans, and deliver a performance that wows fans and kicks off the biggest show of the year on the right foot.

A year ago, Rollins nearly stole the show out from under the rest of the card with a legitimate Match of the Year candidate against Logan Paul. Two years ago, Lynch had one of the best matches of the entire weekend against Bianca Belair.

Rolling into WrestleMania and stealing the show from the pole position would be an apropos way of telling management that they are indispensable and worth every dollar in their asking price.

For fans, it would provide electric openers that confirm that two of their favorites are every bit as good as believed.

Lynch and Ripley should be physically intense if their recent pull-apart brawls are any indication, while Rollins vs. McIntyre has the added wrinkle of CM Punk at commentary, meaning anything can and likely will happen.
