NBA Rumors: Doug McDermott, Kings Agree to Contract Ahead of 2024-25 Season
Doug McDermott is on the move again.
The Sacramento Kings signed the veteran forward to a one-year deal on Wednesday, per ESPN's Shams Charania.
The move comes two days after the Kings traded away forward Jalen McDaniels to the San Antonio Spurs in exchange for a 2025 second-round pick.
The Indiana Pacers acquired McDermott via trade from the Spurs as part of a three-team deal that also included the Philadelphia 76ers in February. It marked his second stint with Indiana, as he also played for the Eastern Conference team for three seasons from 2018-19 through 2020-21.
McDermott has also played for the Chicago Bulls, Oklahoma City Thunder, New York Knicks and Dallas Mavericks during a career that dates back to 2014.
Some of his best basketball came during his first stint with the Pacers when he posted a career-best 13.6 points per game in 2020-21 after he scored what was then a career-best 10.3 points per game the previous season.
That was part of a stretch of four consecutive seasons with double-digit scoring averages on Indiana and San Antonio, although he was not the same player in 2023-24.
The Creighton product averaged just 6.0 points in 46 games for the Spurs and then saw his numbers drop to 4.2 points, 0.7 assists and 0.6 rebounds in 18 games for the Pacers.
Perhaps even more concerning was his outside shooting.
He still connected on 43.9 percent of his three-point attempts with San Antonio last season, which was even better than his career average of 41 percent. However, his percentage dropped to just 32.1 with the Pacers, which was a problem for someone who has always been known as a sharpshooter from beyond the arc.
Much of McDermott's value stems from that shooting and the ability to stretch the floor, especially at this point of his career at 32 years old.
While this was never a signing that was going to drastically alter Sacramento's outlook for the 2024-25 campaign, it will be a more valuable one if McDermott can rediscover his shooting touch from long range after a downturn at the end of last season.
