NHL Playoff Standings 2024: Latest Stanley Cup Odds and Wild-Card Predictions

Joe TanseyApr 2, 2024

The playoff races in each NHL conference were shaken up by a handful of surprising results on Monday night.

The New York Rangers fell to the Pittsburgh Penguins to create more chaos in the Eastern Conference wild-card race.

The New York Islanders earned an overtime win over the Philadelphia Flyers and the Detroit Red Wings picked up a road win over the Tampa Bay Lightning.

Those three results tightened the wild-card race, and it could be even more congested depending on what happens between Pittsburgh and the New Jersey Devils as well as the Washington Capitals and Buffalo Sabres on Tuesday night.

The St. Louis Blues are trying their hardest to make the Western Conference wild-card race competitive. They picked up an overtime win over the Edmonton Oilers to move within three points of the Los Angeles Kings.

St. Louis appears to be the only team in the West outside the top eight that can jump into a playoff position.

Atlantic Division

1. Boston - 101 points

2. Florida - 99

3. Toronto - 95

Metropolitan Division

1. New York Rangers - 104

2. Washington - 82

3. Detroit - 82

4. New York Islanders - 79

5. Pittsburgh - 77

6. New Jersey - 76

7. Buffalo - 75

It's hard to make sense of what the final results of the East wild-card race will be.

Philadelphia moved ahead of Washington back into third place in the Metropolitan Division with its overtime loss to the Islanders, but it is on a five-game losing streak.

The Flyers are the most vulnerable team in a playoff position in the NHL right now and they have a four-game road swing staring them in the face that begins Friday in Buffalo.

Washington can leapfrog the Flyers with a Tuesday win over the Sabres. The Caps have three games in hand on the Flyers and they have five games left against wild-card contenders.

Alex Ovechkin and Co. may not be a fixture in the wild-card race in a week's time if they secure third place in the Metropolitan.

Tampa Bay seems safe in the first wild-card spot, even though its lost to Detroit on Monday, so that leaves six teams fighting for one position.

A Pittsburgh sweep over the Rangers and Devils would be a huge boost to its playoff cause ahead of a Thursday visit to Washington.

Detroit must take advantage of its upcoming three-game home stand to remain ahead of Pittsburgh going into their head-to-head battle next Thursday in Pennsylvania.

The Islanders could be the surprise team that gets the second wild-card. They play four of their next five at home, but they have not won consecutive games since March 7 and 10 and they play the Rangers twice in the final four games. The Rangers could be chasing the Presidents' Trophy in those games.

Wild-Card Prediction: 1. Tampa Bay, 2. Pittsburgh

3. St. Louis - 84

4. Minnesota - 79

5. Seattle - 75

6. Calgary - 73

The West wild-card race is realistically down to three teams.

St. Louis made it a tougher competition against Nashville and Los Angeles with its home win over Edmonton on Monday.

That result came two days after a disappointing home defeat to the San Jose Sharks that seems to destroy any momentum toward the postseason.

The Blues have a tough road game in Nashville on Thursday, but then get three straight games against San Jose, Anaheim and Chicago that could pull them within striking distance of the Kings.

However, Los Angeles has a game in hand on the Blues and has four games left against Anaheim, San Jose and Chicago. Wins in those games could neutralize any threat that comes from St. Louis.

Wild-Card Prediction: 1. Nashville, 2. Los Angeles
