NBA Rumors: Alec Burks, Heat Agree to 1-Year Contract After Knicks Stint

Julia StumbaughJul 3, 2024

Alec Burks is on the move again.

Burks and the Miami Heat agreed to terms on a one-year contract on Wednesday, according to ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski.

Burks was traded to the Knicks alongside Bojan Bogdanović by the Detroit Pistons at the 2024 trade deadline.

He stepped up to play a key backup role for the short-handed Knicks during the team's second-round playoff matchup against the Indiana Pacers.

Burks came off the bench to contribute 14.8 points, 3.3 rebounds and 1.0 assists in six playoff games before the Knicks were eliminated.

Those are the kind of contributions the Knicks were hoping to receive from the veteran backup guard when they added him to provide additional offense whenever Jalen Brunson wasn't on the court.

Burks struggled at times during the regular season, however, as his role as a lead ball-handler for the second unit gradually decreased throughout his first month in New York.

Burks ended the regular season having averaged 6.5 points and 1.7 rebounds in 23 games.

Despite the struggles early in his Knicks' tenure, Burks' new contract proves Miami has faith he can lead its second unit during his age-33 season.

Burks was successfully leading the reserves in Detroit before last season's trade, having averaged 12.6 points and 2.6 rebonds per game in 43 appearances for the NBA-worst Pistons.

If Burks can continue the production levels he demonstrated during the 2024 postseason, he will provide a boost to Miami's bench.
