NBA Rumors: Mavs' Jason Kidd 'Hopeful' for Contract Extension in 2024 Offseason

Jason Kidd is looking to remain the head coach of the Dallas Mavericks for the foreseeable future.

Kidd, who is under contract through the 2024-25 season, is "hopeful that he can secure an extension this summer," according to The Athletic's Sam Amick.

Kidd has been head coach of the Mavericks since the 2021-22 season.

During his first season in Dallas, the Mavs finished fourth in the Western Conference with a 52-30 record and reached the Western Conference Finals, where they fell to the Golden State Warriors.

Dallas was expected to build upon that performance in 2022-23, but questions about Kidd's future with the franchise arose after it finished 11th in the Western Conference with a 38-44 record and missed the playoffs despite the acquisition of Kyrie Irving from the Brooklyn Nets.

The Mavericks now sit sixth in the Western Conference with a 43-29 record and are on pace to make the playoffs.

Dallas' roster is much improved this year with the additions of Dereck Lively II through the draft, Dante Exum and Derrick Jones Jr. The trade reinforcements of Daniel Gafford and P.J. Washington have also helped the Mavericks bounce back from a rough 2022-23 season.

With Kidd at the helm, the Mavericks boast the NBA's sixth-best offense with a rating of 117.9. The defense could use some help, boasting a 115.8 rating, but the team has shown significant improvement on the defensive side of late.

Over the last 10 games, the Mavericks have the second-best defense in the league and fourth-best net rating. That goes along with the fifth-best offense in that span.

If Kidd continues to get this type of effort from his players and the Mavericks make a deep playoff run, there's no reason why he shouldn't be extended.
