Jacob Wasserman, Humboldt Broncos Bus Crash Survivor, Qualifies for 2024 Paralympics

Scott PolacekMar 28, 2024

Jacob Wasserman, who is a survivor of the 2018 Humboldt Broncos bus crash, is going to Paris as a Paralympian later this year.

Steven Ellis of Daily Faceoff reported Wasserman qualified for the 2024 Games in the PR1 men's single category of rowing. The event will be held from Aug. 30 through Sept. 1 in Paris.

Wasserman, who played goaltender for the Broncos and took home the SJHL Rookie of the Year award during his hockey career, was paralyzed from the navel down as a result of the 2018 bus crash that left 16 people killed and 13 others injured.

He told Shane Clausing of 980 CJME in October that he attempted sledge hockey but felt "it was never something that was for me. Hockey was kind of before I was injured."

However, a friend suggested he attempt rowing, and he ended up taking home the gold medal in the Men's PR1 single category of the 2023 National Para Rowing Championship.

Wasserman is actually ahead of schedule.

"That's the dream," he told Clausing in October of getting to the Paralympics. "That's the goal for sure. L.A. 2028 is where we're looking to. We'll see (about Paris in 2024) I guess. There's a chance, but the big goal is for sure L.A."

Now he'll have some previous Paralympic experience in 2028 if he does accomplish his goal to reach the Los Angeles Games as well.
