Florida Panthers are the N.Y Mets of the Ice

Eric RossJan 3, 2009

How do you break a four game losing streak when you're on a road trip? Simple, just keep starting Craig Anderson.

Anderson is second in the league in save percentage with .937 percent. The Penguins are slipping fast in a very tough Atlantic division. Against the Panthers today, the Penguins had 11 total penalties. Eight of those penalties were in the second period alone, including one fighting penalty and two misconduct penalties for Sydney Crosby.

It seems as if the Penguins are breaking down, as they have lost seven of their last 10 games. As for Florida, they are about to heat up again as they always do.

The Panthers are a bigger tease than your eighth grade girlfriend. When you think the game is in their hands, they let it slip out. And when they are down a goal with 10 seconds left, they will make a phenomenal goal to send the game into overtime, then lose the game either in overtime or a shoot out.

As the season continues, I am convinced that the Florida Panthers are the NHL version of the New York Mets. My reason for this theory keeps bringing me back to a Florida Panthers vs Tampa Bay Lightning game in December.

The Panthers were down 3-1 at the start of the third period. In a power play, Cory Stillman scored off a deflected slap shot by Jay Bouwmeester, to make the score 3-2.

Then, with just 14 seconds left, Bryan McCabe shot a rocket into the back of the net to send the game into overtime. But five minutes of overtime was not enough, and so the game had to go into a shootout.

The Panthers led the shootout at first, 2-1, and it seemed that as soon as I blinked it was 3-2 in the shootout, and the Lightning had won. This is what the Panthers are known for. That is what the New York Mets are known for.

It's very interesting how two teams in completely different sports are very much alike.
