Knicks' Tom Thibodeau Needs New Contract to Extend Contending Window Amid NBA Rumors

The New York Knicks are a legitimate contender in the Eastern Conference of the NBA as the current fourth seed and considerable credit for the team's resurgence can, and should, be attributed to head coach Tom Thibodeau.

The mastermind behind the on-court success of the team is currently contracted through the 2024-25 season and according to Sam Amick of The Athletic, "league sources say he hopes to secure his future with the Knicks when both sides plan to revisit the topic this summer."

It is an extension that must happen for the Knicks to remain contenders, both in the conference and for their first NBA title since 1973.

Thibodeau has turned around a franchise that was among the worst in basketball dating back to 2015.

In the years preceding him, head coaches Derek Fisher, Kurt Rambis, Jeff Hornacek, David Fizdale, and Mike Miller combined for a record of 147-329. Since taking over, Thibodeau has a winning record with New York (167-139) and led the Knicks to the Eastern Conference semifinals a year ago.

This year, the Knicks are 42-28 and would likely be even better if injuries had not plagued the team at different points, at least based on a January run that saw them play the best basketball in the NBA while complete.

The team is gritty, tough, and physical in a league that has become more offensive-minded. More importantly, it has been built that way by the front office, according to Thibodeau's coaching philosophy. With a defensive rating of 112.0, the team ranks sixth in the league.

The deals that have been made, and the players that have been acquired, have been brought to the organization because they fit what Thibodeau envisions the Knicks being.

Look no further than the acquisition of OG Anunoby from Toronto. The team expected the small forward to help shore up the defense and, when he has been healthy and available, he has helped do just that.

Not extending Thibodeau for whatever reason would be akin to blowing things up and starting over, especially if a prospective head coach does not approach the game the same way.

It would be a major reboot for an organization that had too many of them in the last two decades.

Thibodeau has the Knicks in a position to compete for a championship, thanks to his approach to coaching and potentially reinjecting a toughness into the game that has been missing since the shift to the current offense-heavy play.

He must be rewarded for his efforts and the strides made to rebuild a proud franchise and leave it better than he found it.
