Jake Paul Says Mike Tyson Matchup Will Be 'Biggest Fight the World Will Ever See'
No one can ever accuse Jake Paul of half-heartedly trying to promote an event he's involved with.
On the latest episode of the BS with Jake Paul show (starts at 5:45 mark), the social-media-star-turned boxer said his upcoming bout with Mike Tyson will be "the biggest fight the world will ever see."
It's important to note that Paul is talking specifically about the number of people who will be able to see the bout. The fight will be streamed on Netflix, which had more than 260 million subscribers worldwide at the end of 2023.
So from the standpoint of people with direct access to watch the fight, Paul is not wrong. He also cited Instagram views as an indication that people are extremely invested in this matchup (starts at 14:45 mark).
"No fight ever has done these numbers in terms of face-off views, Instagram reels," Paul said. "Just on our main pages alone, it's like 50-60 million Instagram views on both of our posts. Not to mention every single other sports page posting it, that's never happened in the history of the sport, to reach those numbers."
It's certainly possible this will be the most-viewed boxing match of all time. The record for pay-per-view buys was 4.6 million for the Floyd Mayweather vs. Manny Pacquiao showdown in 2015.
There's also probably a morbid curiosity people are going to have about Tyson, who is 57 years old and hasn't fought since an exhibition bout with Roy Jones Jr. ended in a draw in November 2020.
We'll never know the actual number of people who watch because Netflix doesn't release that specific information. The streaming giant has dabbled in an "engagement report" that cites hours viewed for every title on its platform over a six-month period.
Rules for the Paul-Tyson fight have not yet been announced. There's been speculation both men would wear headgear and bigger gloves to prevent serious injuries to either fighter. The headgear rumor has been denied by Paul's business partner, Nakisa Bidarian.
There's no official word about the size of the gloves. Ariel Helwani recently said on an episode of The MMA Hour the Texas commission has not yet decided whether or not to sanction the fight.
Whatever the rules end up being, Paul and Tyson are scheduled to square off on July 20 at AT&T Stadium.
