Dolphins Rumors: Bradley Chubb Reworks Contract; Updated Salary Cap for Free Agency

Doric SamMar 19, 2024

Miami Dolphins star linebacker Bradley Chubb did his team a favor on Tuesday.

Per ESPN's Field Yates, Chubb agreed to a restructured contract that converted $13.75 million of his base salary into a signing bonus, creating an extra $11 million in salary cap space for the Dolphins.

The move provides some much-needed cap relief for Miami, which entered Tuesday with just $13.86 million in available cap space, per Over The Cap.

The Dolphins acquired Chubb from the Denver Broncos midway through the 2022 season. The six-year veteran had a strong season this past year, playing 16 games and racking up a career-high 73 total tackles with 11 sacks, six forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries. Unfortunately, his campaign came to a devastating end when he suffered a torn ACL in Week 17.

Restructuring Chubb's deal provides some continuity for a Miami defense that has seen a bit of an overhaul so far this offseason.

The Dolphins cut veteran cornerback Xavien Howard and lost star defensive tackle Christian Wilkins to free agency after he signed with the Raiders. However, they made some strong additions by signing two-time Pro Bowl linebacker Shaq Barrett, former All-Pro safety Jordan Poyer and veteran cornerback Kendall Fuller, among others.

Miami had an impressive start to the 2023 season but ran out of gas toward the end, falling short of the AFC East title in Week 18 and losing in the AFC Wild Card Round.

The Dolphins are hoping these offseason moves will keep them in position to contend for a playoff spot in 2024 and beyond.
