Anthony Edwards Didn't Give Jersey to John Collins After Injury from Highlight Dunk

Mike ChiariMar 19, 2024

Minnesota Timberwolves All-Star guard Anthony Edwards did not exchange jerseys with Utah Jazz forward John Collins on Monday after posterizing him with an emphatic dunk.

After Minnesota's 114-104 win, someone asked Edwards from his jersey from off camera, and it sounded as though Edwards responded, "I gotta give it to Collins."

However, according to Tony Jones of The Athletic, Edwards said, "I gotta give it to Collin," in reference to Jazz guard Collin Sexton.

Edwards is from Atlanta and Sexton is from Marietta, Georgia, and Jones noted that they are "longtime friends" who grew up together.

The monster dunk occurred during the third quarter, and it saw Edwards attack Collins in the lane and essentially throw the ball into the hoop from close range:

Edwards favored his hand for a moment after the highlight-reel dunk, and Collins went down to the floor holding his head.

Collins had to leave the game, but according to Shams Charania of The Athletic and Stadium, he only suffered a head contusion and avoided a concussion.

Per the Associated Press (h/t ESPN), Edwards dislocated his left ring finger after hitting it on Collins cheekbone. Edwards left the court momentarily to pop the finger back into place, and he was able to return.

Edwards told reporters after the game that the dunk gave him "chills," adding: "I always dreamed of dunking on somebody like that."

Leading the 47-21 Timberwolves in scoring with 26.6 points per game this season, the 22-year-old Edwards led all scorers Monday with 32 points, while also registering eight assists and seven rebounds.

Monday's win inched the T-Wolves closer to the Oklahoma City Thunder, who now lead Minnesota by a half-game for the No. 1 seed in the Western Conference at 47-20.
