Jets Rumors: WR Corey Davis Would Be Welcomed Back 'to Compete for a Roster Spot'

After the New York Jets released veteran receiver Corey Davis from the reserve/retired list on Thursday, it sounds like the team would be open to a reunion.

ESPN's Rich Cimini reported on Sunday, "The Jets would welcome [Davis] back to compete for a roster spot." However, Cimini added that "the sense is that he will explore the market and prefers a team closer to his home in Nashville, Tennessee."

Davis applied for reinstatement this past week after announcing last August that he was "stepping away" from football. He is free to sign with any team after the Jets released him.

Interestingly enough, a No. 2 wide receiver is one of New York's biggest remaining needs this offseason. The Jets suffered mightily from a lack of depth behind star wideout Garrett Wilson, who started his career with back-to-back 1,000-yard seasons despite inept quarterback play.

In two seasons in New York, Davis battled through various injuries and recorded a combined 66 receptions for 1,028 yards and 6 touchdowns.

With Aaron Rodgers set to return from the torn Achilles that cost him virtually the entire 2023 season, the Jets need to add talented skill-position players around him if they hope to end their 13-year playoff drought. Re-signing Davis would be a step in the right direction, but it doesn't sound like the interest in a return is completely mutual.
