NFL Rumors: 49ers, Steelers Among 7 Teams to Propose NFL Changes Trade Deadline Date

Doric SamMar 17, 2024

The NFL is set to hold its annual meetings next week in Orlando, and it sounds like changes are coming to the league's trade deadline.

Per ESPN's Mike Reiss, seven teams "have suggested a change to the league's bylaws regarding the trade deadline" with a proposal "to push it back either by one or two weeks." Those seven teams are the San Francisco 49ers, Pittsburgh Steelers, Philadelphia Eagles, Cleveland Browns, New York Jets, Washington Commanders and Detroit Lions.

Jonathan Jones of CBS Sports reported late last month that those teams were hoping to propose moving the trade deadline from Week 8 to Week 10. Jones noted at the time that it was "unclear" if the proposal would get approved because a source said that "there's disagreement among both owners and general managers themselves about whether the deadline should be moved at all."

With the addition of the 17th game on the schedule, an option that makes sense would be for the trade deadline to be moved to Week 9.

"Our professional sports league has the earliest trade deadline by far," Browns general manager Andrew Berry told Jones. "When you look at the other major four sports leagues … I think baseball and basketball, their trade deadline is after about 65% of their games have been played. Hockey's after 78%. We're currently at 45%. Our proposal would move it to about 55% of games played, while also maintaining the integrity of the season."

It remains to be seen if Berry and the other GMs will get their wish of moving the trade deadline back.
