Bears GM Ryan Poles on Fields Trade: It Was 'Best for Both Justin and the Bears'

Andrew PetersMar 16, 2024

Justin Fields' time with the Chicago Bears came to an end after three seasons on Saturday when he was traded to the Pittsburgh Steelers.

In a statement, general manager Ryan Poles called the decision the best move for both the quarterback and for the organization.

"We have engaged in multiple trade conversations in recent weeks and believe trading Justin at this time to Pittsburgh is what is best for both Justin and the Bears," Poles said. "Today we spoke to Justin to inform him of the trade and the rationale behind it for us as a club. We want to thank him for his tireless dedication, leadership and all he poured into our franchise and community the last three years and wish him the best towards a long and successful NFL career."

In his three years in Chicago, Fields recorded 6,674 passing yards, 40 touchdowns and 30 interceptions. He put together a solid season in 2023 with 2,562 passing yards and 16 touchdowns in 13 games, moving in a positive direction after a slow start.

The Bears sent him to Pittsburgh a 2025 sixth-round pick that converts to a fourth-round selection if Fields plays 51% of snaps this season. He joins a quarterback room that recently acquired Russell Wilson, who is expected to be the starter with Fields playing behind him.

Chicago's move to trade Fields comes as the Bears hold the No. 1 pick in this year's NFL draft. The expectation is that the Bears will draft USC quarterback Caleb Williams with the first pick, rationalizing their decision to move Fields.
