Patrick Mahomes Reacts to Hollywood Brown Contract and Eyes Chiefs' Super Bowl 3-Peat

Kansas City Chiefs superstar quarterback Patrick Mahomes expressed excitement Saturday over the free-agent signing of wide receiver Marquise "Hollywood" Brown.

During an appearance on ESPN's SportsCenter on Saturday morning, Mahomes discussed what Brown brings to the table and mentioned the Chiefs' quest to win a third consecutive Super Bowl:

"He just brings a ton of dynamic playmaking ability and I think just being able to add a guy like that who's ready to come in and work and be hungry. I've already talked to him. Going to be a lot of throwing sessions in our future and we're trying to keep this thing rolling. We're going to win the soccer championship here with the women's soccer team [the NWSL's Kansas City Current] and then we're going to try to go back to that Super Bowl again."

Per ESPN's Adam Schefter, Brown signed a one-year deal worth up to $11 million with the Chiefs this week, ending his two-year tenure with the Arizona Cardinals.

For most of Mahomes' six years as a starting quarterback, the Chiefs have had one of the most explosive and dynamic offense in the NFL, but that wasn't the case for much of 2023.

Kansas City ranked a pedestrian 15th in scoring offense with 21.8 points per game, and it largely leaned on an elite defense that ranked second in the league with just 17.3 points allowed per contest.

A lack of reliable weapons around Mahomes was perhaps the biggest reason why the Chiefs' offense was out of rhythm for lengthy stretches.

Future Hall of Fame tight end Travis Kelce was the Chiefs' leading receiver with 93 receptions for 984 yards, plus five touchdowns, but it was a bit of a down year for him, as he eclipsed 1,000 yards in each of the previous seven seasons.

Rookie second-round pick Rashee Rice also came on as the year went on, recording 79 grabs for 938 yards and seven scores as Mahomes' top target among wideouts.

No other non-running back on the team had more than 28 catches, 460 yards or three touchdowns.

The offense rose to the occasion during the playoffs and did enough to clip the San Francisco 49ers 25-22 in overtime in the Super Bowl, but improvements were still clearly needed on that side of the ball.

Brown perhaps instantly becomes the fastest and most electric skill-position player on the roster, and he has had some previous success in the NFL as well.

The 2019 first-round pick out of Oklahoma spent his first three seasons with the Baltimore Ravens, scoring a total of 22 touchdowns, and registering 91 catches for 1,008 yards in 2021.

Brown was traded to Arizona prior to the 2022 season, but he did not experience the same success that he did in Baltimore.

He recorded 67 receptions for 709 yards and three touchdowns in 2022, followed by 51 catches for 574 yards and four scores last season.

Part of the reason for his shortcomings may have been the fact that quarterback Kyler Murray missed significant time due to injury in both seasons.

In Mahomes, Brown will have one of the greatest quarterbacks in NFL history throwing him the ball, and he should represent a huge upgrade over Marquez Valdes-Scantling, who received a ton of playing time as an outside receiver in Kansas City last season.
