Williams, who has been with the Chargers for his entire seven-year career, had 249 receiving yards and a touchdown last year while being limited to just three games due to an ACL injury.

The Chargers released him on Wednesday, saving Los Angeles $20 million on the salary cap.

According to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, a Chargers return isn't out of the picture. Los Angeles would like to bring Williams back, but he will test the market first. This will be the first time Williams has been an unrestricted free agent in his career.

Over the last two years, Williams has missed 18 games, making his cap hit too high for the Chargers to hold on to him at his previous salary.

A healthy Williams has proven to be a serious threat to opposing defenses. He has posted two seasons with 1,000+ receiving yards, the latest coming in 2021. At 29 years old, Williams has plenty left in his tank and could be a good fit for a team looking for some help at the receiver position.

The Panthers are coming off a league-worst 2-15 season and could use a boost from a player like Williams if he can get healthy. As Carolina continues to get quarterback Bryce Young accustomed to the NFL, having another veteran target alongside Adam Thielen and Diontae Johnson could go a long way.
