Justin Fields' Top Trade Landing Spots After Russell Wilson's Steelers Contract

Joseph ZuckerMar 11, 2024

The prospective trade market for Chicago Bears quarterback Justin Fields may have taken further shape Sunday after former Denver Broncos starter Russell Wilson announced he's signing with the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Speculation over Fields' future in Chicago is far outpacing any tangible developments regarding a possible exit.

ESPN's Dan Graziano and Jeremy Fowler reported Sunday that the Bears aren't making much headway, with Fowler writing that "some around the league are starting to wonder whether the Bears have any enticing offers."

Maybe the Steelers were never a serious contender for Fields, but they were at least a QB-needy team that's now off the board entirely.

Here are the franchises that still make sense as a trade partner for Chicago in a Fields swap.

Las Vegas Raiders

The Las Vegas Raiders are expected to release Jimmy Garoppolo this offseason, and they have no clear successor on the roster. They have the 13th overall pick in the 2024 NFL draft, so that may not offer them much of a solution unless they move up into the top five.

Fields would be an upgrade over Aidan O'Connell, who threw for 2,218 yards, 12 touchdowns and seven interceptions in 11 appearances as a rookie. He's also the same age (25) as O'Connell despite having logged two more years of NFL service time.

The hiring of Luke Getsy as offensive coordinator in Las Vegas gives one some pause, though. Getsy and Fields didn't exactly set the world ablaze in Chicago, and pairing them up again could be a recipe for disappointing returns.

Minnesota Vikings

Kirk Cousins

This is entirely dependent on the Minnesota Vikings failing to retain Kirk Cousins in free agency. Fowler reported the Vikings are continuing to discuss a new contract with the four-time Pro Bowler, but his return to Minneapolis is far from a foregone conclusion.

Like the Raiders, Minnesota can't count upon any internal candidates to take over the starting job in the event Cousins leaves. The team went through a revolving door at quarterback in 2023 after he suffered a season-ending Achilles injury.

If the Bears reduce their asking price amid Fields' lukewarm market, a trade might be a tough opportunity for the Vikings to turn down.

For Fields, the trio of Justin Jefferson, Jordan Addison and T.J. Hockenson would far surpass the supporting casts he's had in the Windy City. Landing in Minnesota would set the stage for an ultimate prove-it year.

Seattle Seahawks

Geno Smith

It's looking increasingly likely that Fields will wind up a backup on whatever team he gets traded to. In that scenario, the Seattle Seahawks are a sensible destination despite Geno Smith coming off his second straight Pro Bowl nod.

Smith's performance dipped a bit after winning Comeback Player of the Year in 2022. He threw for 3,624 yards, 20 touchdowns and nine interceptions, and his 59.5 QBR ranked 14th among qualified passers on ESPN.com.

In Fields, Seattle would shore up its quarterback room with Drew Lock hitting free agency while potentially setting up a succession plan. Smith is signed for two more seasons, but the Seahawks could save $25 million by cutting him in 2025 and would only be left with $13.5 million in dead money.
