NFL Rumors: Packers to Release LB De'Vondre Campbell, Save $10.5M of Salary Cap Space

Andrew PetersMar 10, 2024

The Green Bay Packers are releasing linebacker De'Vondre Campbell at the start of free agency on Wednesday, per the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel's Tom Silverstein.

The move will save the team $10.5 million in salary cap space. By waiting until Wednesday to release him, the Packers can put a June 1 designation on his release and earn a larger chunk of salary cap room than they would have if they cut him immediately, according to Silverstein.

Campbell, who has been with Green Bay since 2021, had 76 tackles in 11 games while managing ankle and knee injuries throughout the year.

In 2021, Campbell was named All-Pro after recording 146 tackles, two sacks and two interceptions. He hasn't found the same success in the last two seasons, missing ten games across 2022 and 2023 while dealing with injuries, but it won't be a surprise to see Campbell get picked up quickly in free agency.

Along with Campbell, Silverstein reported the Packers are also expected to release left tackle David Bakhtiari or give him a pay cut. Releasing him would create $20.95 million in cap room.

Heading into free agency, the Packers expect to be more than $20 million under the $255.4 million salary cap, according to Silverstein. Green Bay is looking to leverage that money into potentially landing some valuable free agents while retaining some of its own. Silverstein noted that the Packers want to re-sign cornerback/returner Keisean Nixon, linebacker Eric Wilson and tight end Tyler Davis, all of whom will be free agents next week.

The Packers are coming off a 9-8 season that saw them upset the Dallas Cowboys in the wild-card round before falling just short of an upset against the San Francisco 49ers in the divisional round.

After finding relative success in 2023, a big offseason for Green Bay could help turn the team into a Super Bowl contender.
