Tyrann Mathieu, Saints Agree to New 2-Year Contract Worth Reported $13M

Safety Tyrann Mathieu has signed a deal that will keep him with the New Orleans Saints for the next two seasons, the team announced Thursday.

The two-year deal is worth $13 million, according to CBS Sports' Josina Anderson. NewOrleans.Football's Nick Underhill first reported the deal was done Thursday afternoon.

Mathieu was already under contract through the 2024 season, as he signed a three-year, $28.3 million contract in 2022, but now he will be with the Saints for an additional year through the 2025 season.

Mathieu, who has been with the Saints since 2022, recorded 75 tackles, four interceptions and nine pass deflections last season.

Underhill first reported Wednesday that the Saints and Mathieu were working on a reconstructed contract. A day later, the two sides reached an agreement and Mathieu will remain with the team for at least an additional season.

Mathieu, 31, is a New Orleans native and a former standout at LSU. The veteran spent the first five seasons of his career with the Arizona Cardinals, was with the Houston Texans for a season and played for the Kansas City Chiefs from 2019 to 2021 before signing with the Saints ahead of the 2022 season.

Since landing in New Orleans, Mathieu has had some of his best seasons, recording a career-high 91 tackles in 2022 before another good year in 2023.

The Saints have struggled over the last three seasons, missing the playoffs each year since 2020, when they reached the divisional round. Last season, New Orleans finished 9-8 in head coach Dennis Allen's second year at the helm.

With a key defensive member returning in Mathieu, the Saints will be looking to turn things around and get back into the postseason.
