WWE NXT Roadblock 2024 Results: Winners, Live Grades, Reaction and Highlights

Kevin BergeMar 5, 2024

The future is bright for WWE NXT, focused on the road to Stand & Deliver. However, there was one last Roadblock to pass on the March 5 edition of the gold brand.

Carmelo Hayes would face Tony D'Angelo to crown the No. 1 contender for the NXT Championship at Stand & Deliver. Who would book their ticket to challenge Ilja Dragunov?

In a pair of tag title matches, Lyra Valkyria and Tatum Paxley challenge NXT legends Asuka and Kairi Sane while Bron Breakker and Baron Corbin defended against Andre Chase and Duke Hudson. Could the underdogs topple the dominant champions?

Joe Gacy and Dijak have brought mayhem to NXT, and general manager Ava hoped to put an end to that with an Asylum match. Who would walk out the definitive victor of this rivalry?

These questions and more were on the line during a packed show that would also feature the in-ring return of Shawn Spears. NXT Roadblock was not a show to miss.

Asylum: Dijak vs. Joe Gacy

1 of 8

Dijak brutalized Joe Gacy inside the Asylum cage, using every weapon available. It took a pair of Feast Your Eyes to finally put his rival away.

This was a fun one. While there was very little actual technical wrestling or use of the cage, the two kept it fresh with the variety of unique weapons available in this battle.

Hard Justice has had better matches. His first with Gacy was better than this one, but this did its job in impressive fashion, particularly getting Dijak back on track. He looked like a destroyer throughout.

If NXT is finally ready to push Hard Justice, the time is right. Get him in the North American Championship scene at least for Stand & Deliver.

Result

Dijak def. Gacy by pinfall.

Grade

Notable Moments

  • Dijak delivered a huge moonsault off the top of the cage, though he may have low-blowed himself on the landing.
  • Hard Justice trapped Gacy in a straitjacket then wrapped duct tape around the face of his rival in revenge for their first match.
  • "This is crazy" chants replaced the usual "This is awesome" chants down the stretch.
  • Backstage later, Josh Briggs warned Brooks Jensen about challenging Oba Femi. Dijak called Jensen a "dead man walking".

NXT Tag Team Championships: Wolf Dogs (c) vs. Chase U

2 of 8

Andre Chase fought hard to battle through the powerhouse duo of Bron Breakker and Baron Corbin. However, once Duke Hudson was wiped out outside, The Wolf Dogs hit the End of Days and Spear to win.

The Wolf Dogs just work as a tag team. The chemistry is obvious, and both are working with a more energetic style together than they ever did apart. It makes for really good matches with anyone.

Chase U was not a perfect pairing for Breakker and Corbin, but this was still fun. The Professor fought hard and almost sold the upset down the stretch.

Until the Jacy Jayne drama is dealt with, Chase and Hudson will not be a serious championship contender. That should not stop NXT from putting them in these spots though because Chase U is always fun to watch in any form.

Result

Wolf Dogs def. Chase U by pinfall to retain the NXT Tag

Notable Moments

  • Breakker and Corbin came out in plastic wolf masks.
  • Fallon Henley tried to clear up issues between Thea Hail and Riley Osborne, but Blair Davenport interrupted to mock them, setting up a match later.
  • Osborne, Hail, Jayne and Jazmyn Nyx all watched at ringside.
  • Chase sent Breakker and Hudson to the floor then Breakker hit Hudson with a clothesline onto the announce table.
  • Jayne called Chase U losers behind their back, and Hail stormed off. Later, Hail was found attacking Kiana James and Izzi Dame backstage.

Shawn Spears vs. Uriah Connors

3 of 8

Shawn Spears made quick work of Uriah Connors, finishing up with the C4 and a slow methodical pin. He grabbed a mic to goad out Ridge Holland then begged him to use a steel chair on him. Holland backed down.

This was not even a match as the time between finisher and pinfall was almost as long as the rest of the action. It did show that Spears is a force to be reckoned with.

That is important when he is goading a big man like Holland into a fight. However, this story is not working so far. Spears' slow methodical delivery comes off as put-on.

His feud with Holland comes off as a rehash, visually mimicking Bray Wyatt's feud with John Cena around WrestleMania 30, but neither man is big enough to sell that kind of angle.

Connors was just a jobber for this match, but he is the son of Finlay and likely to get a serious push down the line. It is a shame the commentators barely acknowledge his existence.

Result

Spears def. Connors by pinfall.

Grade

D+

Notable Moments

  • Spears smiled after Holland backed from attacking him.
  • Spears was happy to hear that he would fight Holland next week.
  • After watching Lexis King disparage him in a video, Mr. Stone told Von Wagner that he needed to fight him on his own.

Women's Tag Team Championships: Kabuki Warriors (c) vs. Lyra Valkyria & Tatum Paxley

4 of 8

While Lyra Valkyria and Tatum Paxley looked together, their inexperience proved costly. The Valkyrie accidentally hit Paxley with a roundhouse kick, setting up Paxley to take an elevated InSane Elbow for the loss.

Afterward, Roxanne Perez viciously attacked The Valkyrie, sending her into the steel post then hitting a diving foot stomp on her left arm. Valkyria had to be stretchered out of the building.

All of the announced matches for the night have delivered, and this was no different. Valkyria worked like she belonged against both Asuka and Kairi Sane. Paxley was obvious outmatched but worked hard throughout.

The result was obvious, but the story landed, especially the post-match attack from Perez. This was an appopriate escalation after weeks of Valkyria ignoring The Prodigy.

This women's title feud just got personal, and that should make the Stand & Deliver rematch all the better.

Result

Kabuki Warriors def. Valkyria and Paxley by pinfall to retain the Women's Tag Team Championships.

Grade

B+

Notable Moments

  • Valkyria got the hot tag and ran over both Kabuki Warriors. She nearly won off a Northern Lights suplex on Sane.
  • The Valkyrie out-matched Asuka in the striking game, landing a roundhouse into a combination backbreaker/leg drop for a near-fall.

Blair Davenport vs. Fallon Henley

5 of 8

Fallon Henley worked from behind early in this match, but she ducked the running knee strike from Blair Davenport, leaving the heel recovering outside.

In a surprise return, Sol Ruca planted Davenport with a cartwheel DDT off the barricade. Henley took advantage to win.

It is so good to see Ruca back in action. She is one of NXT's most exciting rising stars and will likely pick up right where she left off. Her athleticism is unmatched in the women's division.

It makes sense for her to target Davenport since Ruca was another one of Davenport's parking lot victims. Much like the rivalry with Nikkita Lyons though, NXT should not rush anything.

Henley and Davenport were working a great 10-minute match that got three minutes. The two could be great with more time. However, at least Henley is back on the winning track.

Result

Henley def. Davenport by pinfall.

Grade

C

Notable Moments

  • Vic Joseph smartly reminded fans that Davenport won the Iron Survivor Challenge by last pinning Henley, giving extra weight to this match.
  • Davenport targeted the left arm of Henley, pushing Henley to work most of the match with one good arm.

William Regal Challenges Charlie Dempsey to Defend the Heritage Cup with Honor

6 of 8

The No Quarter Catch Crew promised to defend the Heritage Cup as a group and would enter the tag team eliminator tournament to crown the No. 1 contenders for the NXT Tag Team Championships.

William Regal arrived to warn Charlie Dempsey that he needed to defend the Heritage Cup with honor and integrity for the sake of British wrestling. Regal's son mocked him.

While the idea of Regal and Dempsey exchanging words is exciting on paper, NXT refused to acknowledge that Dempsey was talking down to his own father.

Instead, the focus was on whether Regal might get back in the ring to fight for the Heritage Cup according to commentary. While The Gentleman Villain may still be able to go, the money pairing right away was Regal managing his son.

This came off as awkward in the moment, but it is likely that these two will make whatever is coming work.

Grade

C-

Notable Moments

  • "That's your father!" chants erupted before Regal and Dempsey exchanged words.
  • Noam Dar revealed that he was planning to move onto bigger and better things with Meta-Four.
  • Arianna Grace agreed to fight Gigi Dolin next week, but if Dolin lost, she would need to be taught by Grace how to be a "proper lady".

No. 1 Contender: Carmelo Hayes (w/ Security) vs. Tony D'Angelo

7 of 8

Carmelo Hayes was rolling until Trick Williams' music hit. The distraction allowed Tony D'Angelo to hit a single-arm powerbomb and Forget About It for the victory.

Afterward, The Don admitted he set up the entrance music to play, but he had a "present" for Melo. Trick's music hit again, and he arrived, taking out Melo and his security until Hayes bailed.

While it was fun to see The Don lean into his power advantage against Melo, this was not as good as it could have been. The pacing was slow, followed by a lame finish. These two can do a lot more.

However, the right man won, and the Stand & Deliver card is finally coming together.

Ilja Dragunov vs. The Don will need some serious build in the next month to match the heat of Melo vs. Trick or Lyra Valkyria vs. Roxanne Perez. It should be a good match regardless.

More importantly, NXT kept it simple and will let Melo and Trick have their one-on-one fight on WrestleMania weekend. Even without gold, this will likely main event and be worthy of that spot.

Result

D'Angelo def. Melo by pinfall to become the new No. 1 contender to the NXT Championship.

Grade

B-

Notable Moments

  • Backstage, The Family named Luca Crusifino as consigliere in a move that took longer than expected. He backed up Channing "Stacks" Lorenzo in sending a warning to Dragunov later.
  • Melo's security at ringside caught him when D'Angelo knocked him off the apron, helping him safely to the floor.

Overall Show

8 of 8

NXT stepped up to deliver a quality show for Roadblock. While nothing was unforgettable, the performances in the ring were strong, and the Stand & Deliver card is coming together.

With the ramp-up for Lyra Valkyria vs. Roxanne Perez and the return of Trick Williams, NXT feels like a hotter product than it did just last week.

Tony D'Angelo is getting a long-awaited main event singles run. Bron Breakker and Baron Corbin have plenty of exciting challengers coming for the NXT Tag Team Championships.

Dijak delivered another memorable match on the best run of his NXT career. Even William Regal is back on television, though his direction is unclear.

Everything set up on this show will have important payoff in the coming months, and that is exciting to think about for the future of NXT.
