NBA Rumors: Patty Mills Intends to Sign Heat Contract After Being Waived by Hawks

The Miami Heat are reportedly set to add some depth to their backcourt.

Per ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski, veteran guard Patty Mills is planning on signing with the Heat. Mills began the season with the Atlanta Hawks before being waived last week.

Mills appeared in 19 games for the Hawks and averaged 2.7 points and 1.1 rebounds in 10.6 minutes of action. The 35-year-old is a career 38.9 percent shooter from three-point range, so he should be able to see more playing time with the Heat.

The addition of Mills will help mitigate the absence of star guard Tyler Herro, who has been out since Feb. 23 with a knee injury. Miami has also been without veteran guard Josh Richardson since Feb. 11 due to a shoulder injury.

A 15-year veteran, Mills has also played for the Portland Trail Blazers, San Antonio Spurs and Brooklyn Nets. He was a member of the Spurs' 2014 championship team, so his experience will be a welcome addition to a Miami team that is trying to make a second straight trip to the NBA Finals.

At 34-26, the Heat rank seventh in the Eastern Conference, but they are just a half-game behind the Orlando Magic for the sixth seed. Miami typically reaches its peak late in the year as the playoffs approach, and that looks to be the case once again as the team has won six of its last seven games.

The Heat will be back in action on Tuesday when they host the Detroit Pistons.
