Anthony Edwards 'Lost Track of Time' Before Missing Timberwolves' Tipoff vs. Blazers

Adam WellsMar 5, 2024

An unusual moment occurred at the start of the Minnesota Timberwolves' game against the Portland Trail Blazers when Anthony Edwards had to sit on the bench because he was late getting onto the court for tipoff.

Speaking to reporters after the game, Edwards explained he "lost track of time." His pregame warm-up routine usually involves doing work with resistance bands outside the team's locker room.

Minnesota was assessed a delay of game violation. Nickeil Alexander-Walker was on the floor for the tipoff, but he was replaced by Edwards 35 seconds into the game.

It's been a notable couple of days for Edwards. He left at halftime of Saturday's loss to the Sacramento Kings to be with his girlfriend who was giving birth to the couple's child.

Everything seemed to go smoothly for Edwards during Sunday's game against the Los Angeles Clippers, at least in terms of getting to the court on time. He finished with 27 points on just 9-of-20 shooting in an 89-88 loss.

There didn't seem to be much blowback from the Timberwolves for Edwards' tardiness on Monday. The two-time All-Star was able to play 35 minutes, though he did exit for a few minutes in the third quarter due to an elbow contusion.

Minnesota snapped its two-game losing skid with a 119-114 victory over the Trail Blazers. The win moved the T-Wolves back into the No. 1 seed in the Western Conference playoff race.

Edwards' streak of 264 consecutive games started came to an end. He came off the bench for each of the first 17 games of his career before being inserted into the starting lineup on Jan. 29, 2021.
