Cowboys Rumors: Michael Gallup Released After Getting Permission to Seek Trade

After spending the first six seasons of his career with the Dallas Cowboys, receiver Michael Gallup will be in search of a new home.

According to Michael Gehlken of the Dallas Morning News, Gallup was released by the Cowboys on Friday.

Gallup signed a five-year, $62.5 million contract in 2022 and was originally set to count for a $13.85 million cap hit in 2024. Calvin Watkins of the Dallas Morning News reported on March 9 that the Cowboys permitted him to seek a trade, but teams weren't very interested because they expected him to be released.

The Cowboys are designating Gallup as a post-June 1 release and they'll save $9.5 million against the 2024 salary cap, according to ESPN's Todd Archer. However, he'll still count for $8.7 million against the team's 2025 salary cap.

The 28-year-old was a third-round draft pick by the Cowboys in 2018. He posted a career-high 1,107 yards in his second season, but his production has declined ever since.

Gallup is coming off a lackluster 2023 campaign in which he recorded a career-low 418 yards despite appearing in all 17 games. He fell out of the pecking order in the passing attack after the signing of veteran receiver Brandin Cooks and the emergence of second-year tight end Jake Ferguson.

If he can stay healthy, Gallup can be a productive receiver when given the opportunity. He will be searching for a team that would allow him to have a bigger role on offense.

By losing Gallup, the Cowboys will depend even more on star receiver CeeDee Lamb, who is coming off an All-Pro campaign in 2023.
