Marshon Lattimore Traded to Commanders; Saints Get 3rd-Round 2025 NFL Draft Pick

Doric SamNov 5, 2024

After some speculation that he might be traded this past offseason, New Orleans Saints cornerback Marshon Lattimore is officially on the move.

The Washington Commanders announced they acquired Lattimore on Tuesday along with a fifth-round pick, in exchange for a third-round pick, a fourth-round pick and a sixth-round pick.

CJGJ: Incident Led to HOU Exit

Through seven games this season, Lattimore has 30 total tackles and two passes defended. He suffered a hamstring injury in Week 7 against the Denver Broncos and then reaggravated the injury in Week 8 against the Los Angeles Chargers, forcing him to exit that game.

ESPN's Dan Graziano and Jeremy Fowler reported on March 3 that "several teams" believed Lattimore was available in the trade market. Lattimore later said during mandatory minicamp in June that he was committed to New Orleans, but the team ultimately opted to deal him away a few months later.

The Saints had converted $13.79 million of his $15 million base salary for 2024 into an option bonus in January, which created $11.03 million in 2024 cap space, per ESPN's Field Yates.

Lattimore was once considered one of the best cornerbacks in the NFL. The 2017 No. 11 draft pick was named Defensive Rookie of the Year and was selected to the Pro Bowl in his first season. He then made three straight Pro Bowls from 2019 to 2021, which led the Saints to reward him with a five-year, $97.6 million contract extension.

Unfortunately, the 28-year-old has struggled to stay healthy in each of the last two seasons. A lacerated kidney limited him to seven games in 2022, and he played just 10 games last season due to an ankle injury.

Lattimore has career numbers of 405 total tackles, 88 passes defended and 15 interceptions. He should be a solid addition to a stingy Commanders defense that ranks fifth in the league this season by allowing 183.3 passing yards per game this year.

Washington is certainly hoping that Lattimore will be able to stay healthy and return to form as a shutdown cornerback.
