Caitlin Clark: 'I Would've Laughed' If Someone Said I'd Break NCAA Scoring Record

Julia StumbaughMar 3, 2024

Iowa guard Caitlin Clark becoming the leading scorer in college basketball history has felt a long time coming for Hawkeyes fans, who spent the season cheering for her to pass Pete Maravich's all-time record of 3,667 points.

But for Clark, who passed the milestone Sunday with a free throw during a 93-83 win over Ohio State, the record is still difficult to wrap her mind around.

"It's really crazy to think about," Clark told reporters after the game Sunday, per Eliot Clough of Rivals. "Honestly, if you would have told me that before my college career started, I would've laughed in your face and been like, 'No, you're insane.'"

"I've always been able to score the ball, but I don't really think people understand how many amazing players have come before me, and been able to score the ball, and do it at such a high rate, and do it for teams that are really really good," Clark continued. "Just to be in the same realm as all these players that have been so successful, whether it's Pete or whether it's Kelsey Plum, or Lynette Woodard, all these people have just given so much to the game."

Clark added that she hopes her new NCAA basketball standard doesn't last forever.

"Hopefully, somebody comes after me and breaks my records, and I can be there supporting them," Clark said. "That's what makes the game of basketball so fun. It'll definitely happen at some point."

Clark announced Thursday that she would declare for the 2024 WNBA draft, making Sunday's victory the last regular-season home game of her Hawkeyes career. She finished the outing with 3,685 career points.
