Saquon Barkley Rumors: Giants RB Eyeing Texans in Free Agency, Has Talked to Stroud

As New York Giants star running back Saquon Barkley approaches free agency, he reportedly has identified his preferred landing spot.

According to Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 in Houston, Barkley has "targeted" the Houston Texans "as his top potential destination and has been communicating with" star quarterback C.J. Stroud.

Wilson noted that there is "mutual interest" between Houston and running back Devin Singletary, who led the team with 898 rushing yards and four touchdowns in 2023. However, he added that the Texans are "expected to explore additional running back options and there are scenarios where they sign more than one running back."

Barkley appeared in 14 games this past season and rushed for 967 yards and seven touchdowns while adding 41 catches for 280 yards and four more scores. He would be a major addition to a Houston team that has emerged as an attractive free-agent destination thanks to a projected $67.4 million in cap space and the presence of Stroud, who was named 2023 NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year.

The Ohio State product led the Texans to their first AFC South title and playoff berth since 2019. He threw three touchdowns and no interceptions in Houston's 45-14 blowout win over the Cleveland Browns in the AFC Wild Card Round. The team's run came to an end in the Divisional Round against the Baltimore Ravens.

Adding Barkley would give Stroud a dependable ball-carrier who can also be a factor in the passing attack. The Texans would be wise to jump at the opportunity to sign him when free agency officially opens on March 13.
