NFL Rumors: Commanders' Josh Harris, Blitzer to Sell Steelers Stake at $4B+ Valuation

Scott PolacekFeb 28, 2024

After leading a group that purchased the Washington Commanders, Josh Harris could no longer maintain his ownership stake in the Pittsburgh Steelers.

He reportedly is in the process of selling it.

Mike Ozanian of Forbes reported Harris and David Blitzer, who is a minority investor in the Commanders, are selling their 4.8 percent stake in the Steelers to Art Rooney II and Thomas Tull. Rooney is the Steelers' president, and Tull is a billionaire financier.

Harris and Blitzer sold their percentage based on the Steelers being valued at just more than $4 billion. Ozanian explained Forbes' valuation of the team at $4.63 billion was released after months-long negotiations had already started.

NFL rules prohibit a team owner from also investing in another team for clear conflict-of-interest reasons, and Harris no longer has to worry about having a stake with Pittsburgh.

This worked out for Harris and Blitzer, who purchased their stake in the Steelers in 2020.

The value of the team has since increased by more than 50 percent. They are also still heavily involved in the sports world with their investments that include the Commanders, NBA's Philadelphia 76ers, NHL's New Jersey Devils and soccer's Crystal Palace.

Yet the sale of the 4.8 percent stake must be approved by 24 of the NFL's 32 team owners before it is officially completed.

Harris' Commanders are in the process of attempting to bounce back from a rough stretch. The last time they finished with a winning record was the 2016 season, and they were an ugly 4-13 in 2023.

They have the No. 2 overall pick of the 2024 NFL draft, though, and could use it to select their next franchise quarterback.

As for the Steelers, they are coming off a 10-7 season that saw them lose to the Buffalo Bills in the AFC Wild Card Round.
