Jayden Daniels to Commanders, Maye to Patriots in Bucky Brooks' 2024 NFL Mock Draft

Adam WellsFeb 27, 2024

The early draft buzz connecting Jayden Daniels to the Washington Commanders with the No. 2 pick doesn't seem to be slowing down.

NFL.com's Bucky Brooks dropped his second mock draft on Tuesday, which had the Commanders taking the reigning Heisman Trophy winner, followed by the New England Patriots landing North Carolina quarterback Drake Maye at No. 3.

There seems to be a lot of excitement right now about Daniels' prospects coming into the NFL.

B/R NFL scout Derrik Klassen noted Daniels would be best served landing in a system that takes advantage of his rushing ability and downfield passing:

"Overall, Daniels has an exciting floor as a prospect. He is a veteran-like presence in the pocket, and he's far and away the best athlete in the class at the position. Daniels' average arm talent and inconsistent accuracy may limit his ceiling, but it's hard to imagine him totally flaming out. Daniels would be best in an offense that leans into his rushing ability and vertical passing, similar to Kyler Murray or Jalen Hurts."

New Commanders offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury worked with Kyler Murray during his run as head coach of the Arizona Cardinals, though not many people seemed particularly enamored with how that offense operated.

The Patriots seem to be the team that a lot of analysts are paying attention to the first real trade-down candidate if they don't want to draft one of the remaining quarterbacks at No. 3.

ESPN NFL draft analyst went so far as to say the Patriots shouldn't select a quarterback because of how bad their roster is right now:

While that is an intriguing idea to speculate on, do the Patriots really want to go into another season with Mac Jones as their starter?

Maybe first-year head coach Jerod Mayo takes advantage of his status as the new guy running things to build out the roster before going after the quarterback, but it's so rare to find a team selecting this high with an obvious need at the most important position on the field passes it up when there's a prospect worth taking at that spot.
